The Board of Commissioners is the governing body of the Rockdale County government. Commission members are elected in partisan, at-large elections to serve staggered terms of four years each.
The current administration consists of Chairman Oz Nesbitt, Sr., Post One Commissioner Sherri L. Washington, and Post Two Commissioner Doreen Williams.
Sherri L. Washington
Sherri L. Washington was elected to the Rockdale County Board of Commissioners in November 2016 and took office January 1, 2017. She earned her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from Savannah State University and then obtained her Law Degree from Texas Southern University.
As an active participant in her community, Commissioner Washington has been involved with several organizations, including the National Executive Committee of the National Council of Negro Women, a charter member of the Rockdale-Newton Chapter, and the Covington Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She is also the founding member of the Top Ladies of Distinction and a member of the 4th Congressional District of the Georgia Federation of Democratic Women. Commissioner Washington proudly serves as alternating chair and co-chair of the Conyers-Rockdale Economic Development Council.
Commissioner Washington has lived in Rockdale County for over 19 years and is the proud mother of one daughter, Jasmyne, and one grandson, Kevin.
Oz Nesbitt, Sr.
Chairman Osborn (Oz) Nesbitt, Sr., is a tangible, touchable, and approachable leader. He is someone Rockdale County’s citizens can count on and reach out to. He has served two four-year terms as Commissioner Post 1 and is currently serving a second four-year term as Chairman of Rockdale County’s Board of Commissioners in Conyers, Georgia.
As he is affectionately known, Chairman Oz demonstrates a robust and disciplined leadership style due to his 15 years in Law Enforcement. He studied at Voorhees College and is a member of the uplift organization 100 Black Men of America. He is a published author of an introspective, inspiring novel – “Fumes and Faith.” He is an award-winning Toastmasters International and East Atlanta Networking Social speaker. As a former Rockdale County Public School employee, Chairman Oz served as a discipline instructor and basketball coach focused on instilling pride, educational commitment, and excellence as a springboard for all youth. Currently, Chairman Oz is the President/Chief Consultant with SPEAK UP! Communications, Inc. SPEAK UP! Communications is a local consulting firm focusing primarily on training & career development and public speaking. Being in the ”people business” for 30+ years, Chairman Oz Nesbitt strives to adhere to the three core key leading principles - ATTITUDE, APPROACH, and APPEARANCE.
As the Chairman of Rockdale County, Chairman Oz Nesbitt continually demonstrates his passion and commitment to the citizens and the greater Rockdale County community via open, transparent communications, dedicated community safety actions, focused economic and business development initiatives, and excellence while leading Rockdale County forward. Chairman Oz’s vision for Rockdale County includes
- maintaining a safe and healthy community,
- creating job and career opportunities,
- building youth/family recreation to enhance each citizen’s quality of life,
- operating an efficient and ethical government, and
- exploring opportunities to boost economic and small business development.
Chairman Oz Nesbitt is an active member of Beulah Missionary Baptist Church in Decatur, serving in various capacities and ministries. His statement of faith is, “God is my ROCK!” Chairman Oz Nesbitt, Sr. is a native of Augusta, Georgia. He is married to Robernett Nesbitt, and they have two girls and two boys.
Doreen Williams
Dr. Doreen Williams was elected to the Rockdale County Board of Commissioners in November 2014 and took office on January 1, 2015. She is a former small business owner and retired educator with a diverse educational background. She earned her Doctor of Education from Georgia Southern University in curriculum studies with concentrations on the role and influence of effective governments. Her master’s degree from Walden University concentrated on the effective use of technology. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in French from Brigham Young University.
Commissioner Williams believes recognizing and caring for those who have fewer resources, or are more vulnerable, is an important part of ethical living. As such she has concentrated heavily on improving outcomes for those with mental and behavioral health challenges. Her work has included hosting numerous community symposiums and forums on behavioral health. She created a Stepping Up Initiative Steering Committee whose purpose is to improve services and resources community-wide so that those having a crisis can be diverted to treatment and not booked into jail for misdemeanor crimes. The committee is composed of judges, the sheriff and staff, the City of Conyers Police Chief and staff, mental health clinicians, representatives from the District Attorney and Public Defender’s offices, Emergency Management including 911, people with lived experience, and community members. She was instrumental in hiring effective staff to coordinate these efforts as well as oversee the development of a Restorative Justice Complex.
Commissioner Williams serves on the board of directors for View Point Health to which she was appointed by the Rockdale County Board of Commissioners in 2009. She also serves on the board of directors for Grit and Grace RCO, an addiction recovery organization.
Commissioner Williams moved to Rockdale County with her husband and their five children in July 1994. Their children have attended Honey Creek Elementary, Edwards Middle and Heritage High School. In addition to their five children and their spouses they now enjoy 13 vibrant grandchildren!
