Construction and Maintenance Projects

Most people do not realize that there are many stormwater pipes and structures under and along the roadways they drive on every day. These pipes and structures make up the drainage system or storm sewer system that captures rainwater and directs the water to the County’s rivers, lakes, and streams. The Rockdale County Department of Stormwater Management is responsible for inspecting and maintaining more than 183 miles of pipe and more than 20,000 drainage structures within the County’s right-of-way.

Unfortunately, a significant portion of the County’s stormwater infrastructure is in disrepair and inadequate in its current state. Over time, drainage system components have deteriorated, separated, clogged, broken, or have otherwise become unsuitable. There are some (usually older) drainage system components that are undersized and unable to support the amount of stormwater that drains to them. Many serious consequences can result from improper management and failure of the County’s stormwater infrastructure, including: flooding of roadways, road collapse, property damage, contamination of water sources, and drowning hazards.

Whether the County’s stormwater infrastructure is damaged, obstructed or undersized, the Department of Stormwater Management is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, repairing and/or replacing these pipes and structures as necessary to ensure their proper operation.

Typical Maintenance of Stormwater Drainage Systems:

1. Repair or replace damaged components.
2. Remove sediment and debris which significantly block flow.
