The Rockdale County Board of Commissioners Meeting Highlights

The Rockdale County Board of Commissioners held a meeting on Tuesday, June 11, 2019, at 10 am kicking off with a great start by honoring an individual that is prominent in the community and highlighting upcoming events in Rockdale County.

The meeting began with the Invocation and Pledge of Allegiance conducted by Pastor Curl Hazell of Agape Fellowship Christian Center. Presently after, the Board of Commissioners utilized the opportunity to acknowledge a county proclamation. The Board proclaimed June 11, 2019 was proclaimed as Mr. Ken Lund Appreciation Day. Through the proclamation, the Board of Commissioners recognized the retirement of Mr. Ken Lund after 47 years of service with Georgia Power. We, Rockdale County, appreciate Mr. Lund’s service to our community, and we bid him well wishes on his well-deserved retirement.

Following the presentation, the Board of Commissioners proceeded and unanimously approved the meeting agenda, the meeting minutes from May 28, 2019 and June 4, 2019, and the consent agenda presented. Regarding the regular agenda, there were two items presented to the Board. Item number 2019-309 addressed the authorization of a special use permit for a Family Daycare Home under section 218-1 Table of Permitted Uses at 4284 Village Green Circle SE, Conyers, Georgia. This was the second reading of this item, and it was motioned to be moved to the next BOC meeting for the voting session on June 18, 2019. The second item read, 2019-315, was to approve the volunteer appointment of Mr. Mark Flowers in the Conyers Rockdale Economic Development Council (CREDC). Due to the boards understanding of Mr. Flowers extensive background of economic development, the Board felt that Mr. Flowers role in the CREDC would be fitting. Therefore, the Board of Commissions unanimously approved for the appointment to take place.

Following the regular agenda, the Board Commissioners held public comment. The first man who spoke, George Kelecheck, first thanked Brian Allen and the Transportation Department for completing the contract for GA- 20 and Hwy 138. Secondly, Mr. Kelecheck addressed his 92 pages of research that he conducted and presented at the BOC meeting on May 5, 2019. Mr. Kelecheck wanted to know the Board’s opinion on what was valuable in his research. The Board reassured that they are in the process of reading his research and will reach out to him as soon as possible via planning and development. The second gentleman who spoke, Norman Smith, is the owner of Home Space Consignment. Mr. Smith wanted to inform the Board and community of his business existence. It is located on 1360 Dogwood Dr. SE, Conyers Georgia 30013 in Suite 400. Home Space Consignment hours of operation are Monday through Saturday 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m.- 6 p.m. Last but not least, Bobby G. Truitt expressed concern and had a complaint against an officer that is part of the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office. The Board heard his complaint and apologized on behalf of Rockdale County.

During board comment, Commissioner Washington shared her advice on self-care and self-love. She recently recognized the importance of self-care via a close friend and, advised everyone to take some time to de-stress and take care of one’s self. Commissioner Williams highlighted a discussion about the benefits for inmates in the Rockdale County Jail System and the conference that she will be attending soon. The conference takes place in Savannah where she will be speaking on “Criminal Justice and Mental Health” as a new form of a social justice issue. Lastly, she thanked Morgan’s for the Article on “Top Women in Rockdale County”. Chairman Nesbit addressed the upcoming events in the Rockdale County Community as part of his board comment. After Board Comment, the Board of Commissioners did not have an executive session. Since there was no further business, Chairman Nesbitt adjourned the meeting. The next Board of Commissioners meeting will be next week on Tuesday, June 18, 2019, at 7 p.m. at Barksdale Elementary School (596 Oglesby Bridge Rd SE, Conyers, GA 30094).
